A Pane Between Us
- "A Pane Between Us" is a black-and-white photography series capturing candid moments of individuals seen through windows in everyday urban settings. Exploring the interplay between observation, emotion, and distance, the project treats the glass pane as both a physical and metaphorical barrier, linking yet dividing viewer and subject. Through subtle gestures, fleeting expressions, and unconscious performances of daily life, the series reflects on the nature of human connection in public spaces, inviting viewers to consider the emotional and ethical complexities of watching and being watched.
The project received Honorable Mention and Jury Top 5 selection at the IPA Photography Awards in 2025.
Jury Statement, IPA Photography Awards 2025:
I-Chan Park: “The Window Between Us” is a record of vision that captures the breath of the city and the most unguarded moments of its people within a world of gray tones. A window is not merely a sheet of transparent glass; it becomes a delicate membrane that divides inside from outside, an invisible boundary through which we secretly glimpse one another. Beyond that threshold, we encounter fleeting gestures, passing expressions, and the unconscious performances of everyday life. The moments within these photographs approach us as if speaking in silence, urging us to reflect not only on the lives of others but also on the gaze with which we view them. It is not a simple act of looking; it is a fragile space where observation and empathy waver, a quiet inquiry into the deep ethics that lie between the visible and the unseen. In the end, “The Window Between Us” gently awakens the enduring possibility of human connection, even in a world viewed from a distance.
